In Briefs: Naming The Shuttles

MOLLY SCHOEMANN: Does anyone feel like there really is no good name for a space shuttle? I think ‘Endeavor’ is not a particularly good name. It sounds too much like it’s hedging its bets. But, I can’t think of any really good shuttle names that strike that balance. In case there is a horrific catastrophe, you don’t want to name your shuttle something overconfident, like the “The Conquering Hero”. But you don’t want to go too far the other way either and give it a tentative name like, “Attempt”.

DANI ALEXIS RYSKAMP: I liked “Discover,” except it was a bit ironic since we weren’t using the shuttles to explore strange new worlds (like the Moon). I’d vote for a name like “Inspiration” except the poor thing would probably blow up like Challenger. Which was also a great name for a shuttle until January 1986. Continue reading
