Phillie Phanatic

JEFF MORROW: There are good reasons many people consider the Phanatic to be the best mascot in baseball, if not in sports. But as a perennial visitor, I’ve felt like the Phanatic, for all his acclaim, can embody some of the worst qualities of sportsmanship in the game.

DAVE TOMAR: The Phanatic was modeled on the notion that Philly fans are somewhat fanatical, which is a fair assessment. The very strange, hula-hoop torsoed creature that brings delight, and sometimes fear, to children is intended to echo the intensity of the fan base. I have never personally driven an ATV over Mr. Met, but it does have a certain symbolic subtlety to it. Besides, where Mr. Met is concerned, this would be an act of euthanasia. Continue reading

MLB Trade Deadline Analysis

DAVE TOMAR:FoxSports.com reported early on Wednesday afternoon that the Philadelphia Phillies have reached an agreement for 2008 AL Cy Young winner Cliff Lee. Pending medical review, this would add last year’s 22-3 lefty to a starting rotation that is actually coming off an excellent July in which the team has compiled a 19-5 record thus far.

CHRIS PUMMER: For all the hype around Roy Halladay maybe getting dealt, this might just be a quite trade deadline. Brad Lidge: Stay OR Go as Closer?

DAVE TOMAR:With the lanky dominance of Ryan Madson drawing justified ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhhs’ from observers, the thus-far brilliant 8th inning specialist may well be the closer of the future. But in a season 50 games deep, far too many people think that his time is now.

At the risk of sounding self-righteous, show some goddamn respect. Brad Lidge was the game’s most important closer last year.

HOWARD MEGDAL: But there are a number of warning signs. If the Phillies want to be in the best possible position to win a third straight NL East title, Lidge may not be the man to close games. Continue reading

Philadelphia Phillies: A Little Class, Please? OR Up Yours, New York!

HOWARD MEGDAL: As someone who grew up in the general vicinity of Philadelphia, and had the good sense to move to New York, I still have a certain level of pity for the town with the well-earned title “America’s Fattest City”.

Dave Tomar: Ahh the New York Mets. Is there a classier organization in baseball?

At a time when most New Yorkers were smoking crack, Daryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden had the urbane sensibility to snort cocaine Continue reading
