SNL: Will Farrell/Usher

COLD OPEN
ZOË RICE: When Sudeikis leaves, I will miss his Biden. This was a fun vehicle to work in Will Farrell’s George Dubya. Enjoyable.

MONOLOGUE
ZOË RICE: Farrell’s goofiness can pull off a lot, in this case the Mother’s Day monologue.

NASAFLU
ZOË RICE: And in this case, loud sneezing. If Andy Samberg is the King of Inappropriate Silly, then Farrell remains the Emperor of Obnoxious Goofy. Great reactions from Wiig, too.

MARTY AND BOBBIE CULP
ZOË RICE: If they had to bring back this sketch, then the LGBT prom was the way to do it. The sketch got somewhat more enjoyable once Farrell and Gasteyer started singing, but I would have been okay to let this oldie go without reprise.

ESPN CLASSIC
ZOË RICE: This bit was as innocuous as always, but it’s still the same joke – Forte’s dumb and Sudeikis milks the lady puns. The OJ add-on felt more odd than anachronistically quirky.

100th DIGITAL SHORT
ZOË RICE: A great tribute to the history of the Digital Short. Amazing Natalie Portman moment. But as they say at Passover, Sergio grinding with Justin Bieber would have been enough. Daiyenu.  The whole “Suck our own…” spin was the weakest part, and unnecessary amidst the walk down Digi-memory lane.

USHER
ZOË RICE: Ten years ago, I’d've danced to this at the club. Now I hope it makes the Step Class set list. I can’t see myself downloading it, but Usher gives good dance pop.

UPDATE
ZOË RICE: Seth had me giggling at times after his off-week last episode. “Really!” got in some good digs on a timely topic, and Get in the Cage (with Liam Neeson) remains an enjoyable sketch, possibly because Nic Cage has a deep well of crazy.

2012 FUNKYTOWN DEBATE
ZOË RICE: I think this needed to be a bit more straight-up political, either over-the-top visually or in content, but not both. The “debates” wound up feeling silly for silly’s sake.

BROADWAY SIZZLE
ZOË RICE: Painful. But to be positive, at least not a repeat character.

USHER
ZOË RICE: Not loving this one – too slow jammy for me.

25th ANNIVERSARY
ZOË RICE: “Toast speeches” is another sketch I would have been happy to see vanish when Wil Forte left. I’d have toasted the end of this sketch had it ended much sooner.

ALMOST PIZZA
ZOË RICE: Didn’t this air just a couple weeks ago? Rerun Booooo.
